Our next stop would be Put-in-Bay, which is a small island in Lake Erie that is mostly walkable, with lots of golf carts instead of cars. It has a very small airport with a short-ish runway, and I had done some research to understanding the landing and overnight fees. Apparently it can get pretty busy in the summer months, so I called ahead to be sure we could find tiedowns, and they said it would be no problem. We turned in our rental and took off around 11am for our short flight north to the lake.
It was very humid descending over the lake, with a very interesting approach to the runway past the (very tall!) Perry's Monument.
We found a non-reserved tiedown spot and paid the landing fee in the terminal.
I had booked a hotel right across the street from the airport because I (correctly) assumed it was not permissible to take a car seat on the golf carts. Since we couldn't check in until the late afternoon, I left all our bags in the airplane and Katherine fed Violet and we walked to town, which was notionally around 1 mile straight down the road.
Unfortunately it offered no shade and we suffered in the sweltering heat. Around 75% of the way to town, poor Magic was visibly panting hard and we had trouble getting her to drink enough water. Fearing she could have heat stroke, we ducked into an air conditioned hotel lobby and cooled off and rehydrated Magic.
It was just a bit further to town, so we walked to get lunch and regroup.
Since we had decided to stay for two nights, and virtually everything in Put-in-Bay was in town, I decided it made no sense to stay a 30 minute walk from town. We called to cancel the original hotel (with one night penalty) and I got a hotel directly in town. I left Katherine, Violet, and Magic at the hotel to cool off and relax and I rented a golf cart (only $15 hourly) to get our stuff from the airport. It was a very loaded up golf cart!
Fortunately the rest of our time went much better, and we enjoyed a couple days in the little island. We explored the town, had some good food, and visited Perry's Monument.
